I was recently invited to attend an event to benefit the Down Syndrome Association of Memphis and the Mid-South. It was a Kentucky Derby themed event held at the Memphis Botanical Gardens. All the guests showed up in their Derby best for a live viewing of the race, there was also a live and silent auction, and an amazing performance by Company D. Company D is a local dance group made up entirely of individuals with Down Syndrome.
I was welcomed with open arms. I was so excited to meet so many self advocates! I was also auctioned off!! 🙂 Well the chance to have a lunch date with me for a self advocate was auctioned off. My sweet husband got into a bidding war and won! I had a very handsome escort onto the auction floor as well. I plan to go on a lunch date with several self advocates in the near future. They even put a nice pic of me with my sister on the auction table. We also won a painting by the lovely and talented Lacey in the silent auction.
The performance by Company D was my favorite part of the evening though. The Dancers put so much heart and soul into their dancing. It was magically beautiful to watch.
I had an absolutely wonderful time, and I so so grateful that I was invited! Thank you DSAM!!
